plonk .sh
faq
how fast is the lookup?
we search as you type. instant answers come from ICANN zone files (under 1ms), cached RDAP answers arrive in a few milliseconds, and live RDAP verification streams in within 100–500ms per domain. slower registries can take a few seconds — you'll see those marked as checking.
do you actually register the domain?
no. plonk only checks. when something is free we link out to a registrar — registration, pricing and payment all happen there.
how accurate is "available"?
zone-file answers are definitive for registered domains. a name absent from the zone is almost always free, but registries occasionally reserve names or attach premium pricing — we flag those when detectable. always confirm at the registrar before you celebrate.
why is .com always "taken"?
because .com is a wasteland. we surface alternatives so you can find what is actually free.
do you store my searches?
no logging of queries, no cookies, no "your-recent-searches" we sell to anyone.
where do the checks actually happen?
bulk answers come from our copy of the ICANN zone files. live verification runs directly from your browser: DNS lookups via Cloudflare/Google DNS-over-HTTPS and registry RDAP queries — so those services see your IP for the domains being verified, the same as if you visited them. we never see or store any of it. a few registries don't allow browser queries; those fall back to our server.
